A recent British study showed that vitamin D supplementation reduces the risk of muscular dystrophy in the elderly by a high percentage.

According to the study, published in the International Journal of Calcified Tissue, researchers at the Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil, and University College London, UK, analyzed data from 3,205 healthy individuals aged 50 and over.

The researchers explained that muscular dystrophy is an age-related loss of muscle strength and is a major risk factor for physical disability later in life.

The researchers found that individuals with vitamin D deficiency, defined as less than 30 nanomoles per liter in blood, had a 70 percent higher risk of developing muscular atrophy by the end of the study period compared to those with normal levels of the vitamin, defined as more than 50 nanomoles per liter.

Vitamin D plays an important role in regulating the body's absorption of calcium and phosphorus, and helps maintain the functioning of the brain and immune system. Its deficiency can lead to a loss of bone mineral density and a decrease in muscle mass, strength and function.
