The police reminded the public that the virtual world is not lawless.

Members of the public should not be lucky or greedy for small gains, thinking that they can hide their identities in the online world or engage in illegal activities under false identities.

As a puppet account holder, using your own bank account to handle funds from unknown sources will commit the crime of money laundering under the Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance, Chapter 455 of the Laws of Hong Kong. The maximum penalty is 14 years in prison.

In addition, a search engine has been added to the "Net Keeper" website set up by the police to combat Internet fraud. After inputting suspicious calls and emails, citizens can know whether the relevant information has ever been involved in a fraud case, reducing the chance of being deceived.

If citizens are in doubt, they can also call Anti-Scam 18222 for inquiries and assistance.
