An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck Hatay, southern Turkey, and was felt by residents of a number of regions in Syria.

The Turkish Emergency and Natural Disasters Administration (AFAD) said in a statement today, Sunday, that the earthquake occurred at 21:13 local time (18:13 GMT).

The statement added that the depth of the earthquake reached 11.67 kilometers.

No information was received about losses as a result of the earthquake, which was also felt by the residents of a number of Syrian governorates.

Turkey is located on many fault lines, and is frequently affected by earthquakes. In 1999, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the east of the country, killing more than 17,000 people, including a thousand in Istanbul.
