It won't be Transrapid speed, but the Munich S-Bahn will soon be bringing passengers to the airport much faster.

Before that, however, some construction work is still due.

With the S-Bahn to the airport: This should be much faster in the future.

In order to shorten the travel time, the maximum speed on line S8 from and to the Johanneskirchen S-Bahn station is to be increased from 80 to 120 km/h.

The S8 currently takes around 40 minutes from the main train station to the airport.

Deutsche Bahn was initially unable to answer how much faster this should go in the future – in any case, a noticeable improvement is expected.

Munich: Noise barriers are necessary when the S-Bahn speeds up

In order for this to work, the railway has to build.

Along the tracks to Johanneskirchen, a 700 meter long and up to four meter high noise barrier is to be built on one side.

On the opposite side on Musenbergstraße, the construction of a noise protection wall up to 3.50 meters high is planned at almost 300 meters.

A so-called plan approval procedure is necessary for this.

The railway wants to submit the documents in January 2023, according to a letter to the Bogenhausen district committee.

The estimated construction time is the first half of 2025.

In the course of the construction work, one track will be closed for around six weeks at a time.

Munich: Many would like an express S-Bahn to the airport

An express S-Bahn to the airport is a long-cherished wish of many politicians.

Lufthansa, as co-operator of Terminal 2, has also recently campaigned for this and called for the fast connection by 2025.

At the beginning of December, the Free State and the railways signed a contract for a construction project to improve the rail connection at Munich Airport.

Thanks to the “Munich West Airport flyover”, the two converging lines of the S1 and S8 should no longer obstruct each other.

Then the S-Bahn trains can drive in and out of the airport station independently and without red signals.

The start of construction for the project, which is intended to better connect the airport, is scheduled for autumn 2023.

It should be finished in 2028.

The city council had also recently voted for a long-distance train station at the airport.

With such an ICE stop, the travel time between the main train station and the airport would be reduced to 15 minutes.

The Munich city councilors want the idea to be included in the federal transport route plan.

It is still unclear what the new S-Bahn plans in Johanneskirchen mean for the four-track expansion of the Daglfing-Johanneskirchen route.

In the tunnel variant preferred by citizens and the city, the Johanneskirchen station would be underground.
