On the sixth anniversary of the Islamist terrorist attack on the Berlin Christmas market in 2016, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser recalled the crime.
The assassination is a reminder to continue fighting Islamist extremism and terrorism with all consistency, the SPD politician said in a statement on Sunday in Berlin.
"Because the threat remains unchanged."
On December 19, 2016, an Islamist terrorist drove into the Christmas market on Breitscheidplatz in a stolen truck.
A total of 13 people died as a result of the crime, one of them years later as a result.
About 70 people were injured, some seriously.
The assassin fled to Italy, where he was shot dead by police.
December 19 is a day of mourning for people who have been killed or injured in body and soul, explained Faeser.
"And it is a day of shame that the federal and state security authorities were not able to prevent the crime, but also of shame that the needs of the victims and their families have been given too little attention for far too long," said the minister.
"We need to reach out - in all government agencies - with more empathy and more support to the people whose lives were dramatically changed by such a terrible attack."
