Nine Iraqi federal policemen, including an officer with the rank of major, were killed on Sunday in a terrorist attack targeting their vehicle in the Kirkuk governorate in northern Iraq, and it was attributed to the "ISIS" organization, two security sources told AFP.
A security source in Kirkuk said on Sunday that "members of the terrorist organization attacked a tanker belonging to the first regiment of the second brigade within the mechanized division of the Federal Police with an explosive device."
He added that the attack was accompanied by a "direct attack with light and medium weapons" in the village of Shalal al-Matar, 65 km from the center of Kirkuk governorate, explaining, "We killed one of their attacking elements, and we are working to search for the other elements."
The death toll rose from 7 to 9 after the death of two wounded policemen, according to the source.
The website "Alsumaria News" quoted a security source as saying that nine federal policemen, including an officer, were killed when an explosive device exploded in Kirkuk province.
The source said, "The device targeted two vehicles of the security forces of the Federal Police in the district of Riyadh, Kirkuk Governorate," adding that the device "resulted in the death of nine associates, including an officer with the rank of major, and the wounding of another."
Shortly after the terrorist attack, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani, issued a statement requesting "the pursuit of the terrorist elements that committed this cowardly terrorist act," instructing the security forces "to pay attention, to inspect the roads carefully, and not to give the terrorist elements an opportunity."
On Wednesday, an Iraqi officer and two soldiers were killed when an explosive device targeted their vehicle while it was crossing a road in the agricultural area of Tarmiya, about 30 kilometers north of Baghdad.
