A man was charged on Sunday on suspicion of 'facilitating the attempted illegal entry into the UK' of people, in connection with the investigation into the sinking of a migrant boat in the English Channel which caused four dead on Wednesday, British police said.

A 19-year-old man, Ibrahima Bah, was arrested on Friday "in connection" with the sinking investigation, police said in a statement released on Sunday.

He was charged with “knowingly facilitating the attempted arrival in the UK of persons whom he knew or had reason to believe were asylum seekers”.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in court in Folkestone, southern England, on Monday.

Four dead, 39 survivors

Four migrants, including a teenager, died in the sinking of their boat while trying to cross the English Channel on Wednesday night.

Thirty-nine were rescued.

The police explained in the press release that they continue to work to establish the identity of these victims and notify their loved ones.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 45,000 migrants have made the dangerous crossing in these busy waters, unheard of.
