Hours before the World Cup final, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took the stage and called for the establishment of an international peace conference.
After FIFA refused his request to give a speech, Zelensky delivered a message in a sporting spirit in which he emphasized his readiness to hold a peace summit "this coming winter that will unite all the nations of the world around the path to world peace."
Also, Zelensky added: "This tournament has proven time and time again that different countries and nations can decide who are the best in a fair game but not in a fire game," drawing a parallel between the World Cup and his country's situation after almost ten months of war.
The president of Ukraine also said: "Please support Ukraine in its efforts to restore peace. Join the conference and be champions of peace. Next, we will see the final together and the end of the war."
