Despite Serbia's protests, Kosovo applied to join the European Union, which threatens to escalate tensions in the Balkans.

Writer Gennady Petrov said, in a report published by the Russian newspaper Nezavismaya, that after Albin Kurti, Prime Minister of Kosovo, delivered a request for his country to join the European Union, the Serbs revolted, and Serbian President Aleksandr Vucic considered that step a violation of all European legislation and agreements.

The writer stated that Russia is ready to communicate and intervene to resolve the crisis, as Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that the Russian ambassador to Serbia is in close contact with the Serbian leadership, and has instructions regarding concrete steps to support normalization or suggest ways to normalize the situation, and that Moscow is awaiting a response from Belgrade.

And Petrov highlighted that Albin Kurti, while presenting the request, seemed to be a symbolic act only, as he said during the ceremony, "We do not want to stand on the sidelines; we are not in a hurry, we want to build the European Union on our land, and with our people."

While Vucic immediately stated that he considers the fact of submitting the application a violation of European law, and is inconsistent with the Washington agreement signed in 2020 with the mediation of former US President Donald Trump.

And the writer indicated that at the time of signing that agreement, Kurti had criticized the then Prime Minister "Hoti" for signing the Washington Agreement, and at Kurti's request, the Kosovo parliament did not ratify this document.

The writer believes that in parallel with these developments, the situation in the region is getting hotter.

Last Wednesday, the Kosovo police took control of the parliament in the municipality of Severna Mitrovica, a Serbian municipality, as he put it.

Accordingly, the representatives of the Serbian parties do not participate in the work of this municipality, which necessitated that new members of the legislative body be sworn in - on the same day - under the supervision of the Kosovo Police Special Forces.

The Kosovo authorities also decided to hold new elections for Serbian municipalities on December 18, and the Serbian parties announced their boycott and non-recognition of their legitimacy.

The writer stated that the Serbs will not dismantle the barricades that they have put in place, while no additional measures have been taken by any of Serbia and Kosovo, as European attempts to resolve the crisis are active.

Miroslav Lajcak, the European Union's Special Representative for the Western Balkans, and Gabriel Escobar, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, visited the two countries, where they met both Kurti and Vucic.
