To solve a "previous crisis"...the IAEA delegation arrives in Tehran, and Iranian optimism about the results of the visit

Today, Sunday, a delegation consisting of 5 members of the International Atomic Energy Agency arrived in Tehran to conduct new negotiations with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Today, Sunday, a delegation consisting of 5 members of the International Atomic Energy Agency arrived in Tehran to conduct new negotiations with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Tasnim news agency, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Behrouz Kamalvandi, said there is a realistic hope that the remaining differences with the UN atomic agency will be clarified and resolved in Tehran.

In the negotiations, the International Atomic Energy Agency is mainly interested in interpretations related to 3 sites in Iran where traces of nuclear material were found indicating secret activities in the past.

Tehran denied all accusations in this regard, saying that its nuclear projects are peaceful and that the country is not pursuing a secret weapons program.

The head of Iran's nuclear agency, Mohammad Islamic announced on Saturday that his country's capacity to enrich uranium is greater than ever before in the history of Iran's nuclear industry.

A crisis that goes back years

And the International Atomic Energy Agency announced, last Wednesday, that its technical team will visit Tehran today, Sunday, in an effort to settle a years-old crisis related to the investigation into finding uranium particles in undisclosed sites in Iran.

For years, the International Atomic Energy Agency has called on Tehran to give an explanation for the presence of uranium in 3 unauthorized sites, and has requested "access to sites and materials" and to collect samples.

It is not expected that the head of the agency, Rafael Grossi, will visit Iran this time.

On December 9, an Islamist said that traces of the enriched uranium found in Iran had been brought into the country from abroad.

Finding traces of nuclear materials in unauthorized sites exacerbated the complications that impede the revival of the agreement concluded in 2015 between major powers and Iran over its nuclear program, an agreement that has been reeling since 2018 due to Washington's withdrawal from it during the administration of former US President Donald Trump.

A delegation from the agency had planned to visit Tehran last month, but the visit did not take place after the agency's board denounced Tehran's lack of cooperation and failure to provide "technically reliable" answers.

The agency considered that it was unable because of this to ensure the peacefulness of Tehran's nuclear program.

Last November, the IAEA confirmed that Iran had begun enriching uranium to 60% at its Fordow nuclear plant, largely exceeding the 3.67% threshold set under the nuclear deal and approaching the 90% threshold needed to build an atomic bomb.

The 2015 agreement provides for easing sanctions on Iran in return for restricting its nuclear program, to prevent it from secretly developing a nuclear bomb, knowing that the Islamic Republic has always denied seeking this end.
