Networks Twitter verification will return in December with a new classification in three colors
Since his arrival on
Twitter, Elon Musk
has not stopped boasting of the social network's audience figures.
According to him, Twitter is consistently breaking active user records despite (or perhaps thanks to) his controversial moderation decisions.
But Musk's latest order to the company's engineers seems to show that more and more users are considering the possibility of migrating to other social networks.
This Sunday, during the
World Cup final in Qatar,
the Twitter support account advanced that, from now on, it will not be possible to link to a profile on other similar platforms, such as
Mastodon
or
Instagram, from the social network.
"We are aware that many of our users actively participate in other social networks. However, we will no longer allow the free promotion of certain social networking platforms on Twitter," starts the thread that explains the new limits.
Although between the different social networks there is usually some animosity and some limits at the infrastructure level, no social network has so far prohibited a user from linking to their profile on another network.
Specifically, the measure affects
Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr and Post.
Mastodon and Post are perhaps the key names on the list, as they
seem to be attracting the most users
with each new controversial decision by Musk.
The first is a service very similar to Twitter but that is committed to a federated and decentralized system.
It is a bit more complex to set up the first time you use it because it requires you to choose a specific server to create the account but the user experience is very similar.
The second is a clone of Twitter that is mainly focused on publishing articles and news and that has managed to attract several
well-known US journalists.
There is a waiting list to sign up and at the moment it
is in the experimental phase.
Twitter will allow you to continue including links to these social networks if they are part of a paid advertising campaign, but the rule will prevent a user, for example, from linking from his Twitter profile to an account on Mastodon or Instagram.
You will not even be able to name these networks
or the username you have on them.
will also prevent the use of link aggregation services
that generated a static web page with the different social platforms to which a user belonged, such as Linktree or Lnk.bio.
Nor will it allow other social networks to have a Twitter account to promote their service.
The company says it will soon remove messages already posted with such links and
has threatened users with temporary bans
if they try to skip the new rule, or permanent bans if they do so repeatedly.
The decision comes shortly after Elon Musk suspended the accounts of several journalists for reporting on the termination of the automated account that followed the path of his private jet using publicly available information.
This past weekend Musk, who has defined himself in the past as an "absolutist of freedom of expression",
has also canceled the accounts of other journalists critical
of his way of moderating the social network.
