World Conference on Nature: 30 percent of the earth's surface should be placed under protection

2022-12-18T22:16:25.470Z

At the World Conference on Nature in Montreal, a key requirement of Germany and the EU is to be included in the proposal for the global framework.

In order to stop the destruction of nature, 30 percent of the earth and the sea are to be placed under protection by 2030.

Thus, at the World Conference on Nature in Montreal, a core demand of Germany and the EU was included in the proposal for the global framework, which is to be adopted by this Tuesday.

However, EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius initially saw a need for fine-tuning.

One wishes for “more clarity and more ambition”.

The draft was presented by the Chinese presidency on Sunday.

The summit was originally scheduled to take place in China.

Because of the Corona policy there, however, it was relocated to Montreal, where the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity is based.

With the agreement, the 196 contracting states want to stop the impoverishment and overexploitation of nature by 2030 and then create the transformation for a life "in harmony with nature" by 2050, as the draft says.

Lots of points “pointing in the right direction”

In order for this to succeed, the industrialized countries and countries that take part voluntarily should provide 20 billion dollars a year for international nature conservation by 2025, twice as much as before.

By 2030, the amount is expected to grow to $30 billion annually.

The countries of the Global South had demanded 100 billion dollars annually.

Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) called China's draft "brave".

It contains many points "that point in the right direction".

In the "decisive phase" she will continue to work to ensure that the international community resolutely fights the extinction of species.

At the beginning of the conference on December 7th – despite years of negotiations – practically all 22 goals, with the help of which the destruction of nature should be stopped by 2030, were disputed.

Georg Schwede, European representative of the "Campaign for Nature" initiative, told the FAZ that the Chinese proposal was "better than expected in many areas".

However, environmentalists and scientists expressed disappointment.

The proposals were not enough to stop the destruction of nature and thus of the basis of human life.
