Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova considered that the situation worsened in Kosovo immediately, after the European Union held a summit with the participation of Western Balkan countries in Albania.
Zakharova said on her channel on the Telegram website: “On the sixth of this month, the European Union held a summit meeting in Albania, and there was the adoption of the Tirana Declaration, which supports the aspirations of the Western Balkan countries to join the European Union, as it was mentioned in a separate paragraph of it that separatist Kosovo stands on the path.” After less than a week, the separatists in Kosovo escalated armed and carried out violent provocations in the region.
Zakharova indicated that the vast majority of the current population of Kosovo are of Albanian origin, and they closely follow the life of the state and the European perspective of neighboring Albania.
And Zakharova continued: “We noticed something similar to this scenario in 2008 in Georgia when it saw that it was going to join the European Union, and started bombing South Ossetia, Russian citizens and peacekeeping forces, and this is a proven mechanism for thinking about the possibility of impunity.”
Zakharova pointed out that the danger of escalation and armed confrontation in the northern part of the region is increasing, and therefore there may be completely different prospects for Kosovo instead of the desired European future.
Zakharova concluded by saying: “Most importantly, the European Union leads Belgrade to a beautiful future on the one hand, and on the other hand it engages in provocations against Serbs, and this is treason from the beginning, and it resembles a wedding that begins with the betrayal of one of the spouses.”
