Under the title “The role of unions and civil and professional associations working in the health field in achieving the goals of sustainable development and their connection to the goals of population development,” the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, held a consultative workshop today, at the Damarose Hotel in Damascus.

The workshop, in which representatives from non-governmental organizations and private health centers participated, aims to define the tasks of organizations and associations working in the health field in Damascus and its countryside by implementing the commitments of the Nairobi Summit on Population and Development in 2019.

The workshop axes focused on defining the context of the international population conferences leading up to the Nairobi Summit and Syria's commitments to it, the role of the Syrian Commission for Population and Family Affairs and its work mechanisms in the field of combating violence, and the World Health Organization's programs related to gender-based violence.

The head of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Eng. Samar al-Sibai, stated in a statement to reporters that the workshop aims to define the tasks of organizations and associations working in the field of sustainable development in order to know their achievements, and to be synonymous with government work, and to develop the necessary statistics, and to know the results of its work in this field, noting that the Commission is working on An integrated file aimed at protecting the family, and linked to the commitments of the Nairobi Conference.

Al-Sebaei said: The work is carried out in cooperation with a number of concerned authorities on a number of projects and activities in the field of protection from violence, including the Family Protection Unit to protect women and children who are survivors of violence by providing a range of health services, legal advice, psychological support and professional empowerment for them. Pointing out that the National Observatory of Violence was established through adopting monitoring points in a number of police stations, hospitals and NGOs within the Damascus governorate, with the aim of creating a database on domestic violence.

For her part, the official of the health organization in the WHO office, Hiyam Bashour, explained that the organization is working on a set of initiatives related to health strategies and policies related to achieving the goals of sustainable development at all levels.

While Dr. Hala Zoghibi, head of the organization's pharmaceutical department, indicated that work will be carried out through intensive activities during the next year, in cooperation with a number of actors to further enhance the achievement of population development goals.

Director of Population at the Authority, Waddah Al-Rakkad, pointed out that the Authority has networked with a number of agencies, and translated the national commitments made at the Nairobi conference into a national plan that included a set of measures to coordinate policies and procedures related to their implementation.

It is noteworthy that the Nairobi International Summit on Population and Development was held in 2019, during which focus was placed on empowering women, youth, people with disabilities, and displaced families to take their participatory role in development.
