Advent wreath leads to house fire – grandson saves grandma from the flames

A house in Monheim am Rhein (NRW) burned out almost completely on Sunday.
The 91-year-old woman inside the house was rescued from the flames by her grandson.
Monheim – A burning Advent wreath led to a devastating fire in Monheim am Rhein (Mettmann district in North Rhine-Westphalia) on Sunday.
A house burned almost completely.
Several hundred thousand euros were damaged.
Luckily nobody was injured.
The family home is uninhabitable after the severe fire.

Woman lights candles on Advent wreath – then the whole house burns
As the Mettmann police report, a 91-year-old woman from Monheim lit the candles on her Advent wreath around 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
"According to the woman, the Advent wreath caught fire shortly afterwards, which spread to the furniture in the house," the police said.
The grandson of the 91-year-old, who lives in the neighborhood, noticed the smell of burning shortly afterwards, reports 24RHEIN.
When he went to see what was going on, he noticed that his grandmother's house was on fire.
He rescued his grandmother from the burning house and then called the fire brigade, police report.
Fire in Monheim: Several hundred thousand euros in damage
Although the fire brigade was on site quickly, the emergency services could no longer save the house.
It burned down almost completely and is uninhabitable.
"The property damage is estimated at a sum of several hundred thousand euros," the police continued.
The 91-year-old woman was unharmed thanks to her grandson's quick intervention.
However, rescue workers took her to the hospital to be checked.
