Alpine skiing: Odermatt resists Kristoffersen in Alta Badia

2022-12-19T16:42:00.220Z

The Swiss Marco Odermatt seemed to draw on his last strength to resist the Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen and win the second giant of the World Cup in Alta Badia (Italy) on Monday at the end…

The Olympic champion was ahead of Kristoffersen, already second on Sunday, by 20 hundredths and the Slovenian Olympic vice-champion Zan Kranjec by 92 hundredths.

Alexis Pinturault took 6th place at 1 sec 41.

"It was surely my biggest fight", blew, apparently exhausted, Marco Odermatt at the microphone of the International Ski Federation (FIS) after his 4th victory of the season.

"I couldn't have done better. Henrik (Kristoffersen) had a great race, I was lucky to keep my lead. It was difficult, exhausting, after the week in Val Gardena I didn't have much energy. These two giant races were long and particularly turning."

The 25-year-old Swiss did well to crush the competition in the first round, allowing him to be average on the second track (22nd in qualifying) but to return to victory anyway after his 3rd place on the first disputed giant sunday.

Odermatt has just brilliantly completed a terrible sequence of four races in five days with two descents in the neighboring resort of Val Gardena on Thursday (2nd) and Saturday (7th), then two giants in Alta Badia on Sunday (3rd) and Monday.

Nine podiums in ten races

Versatile, the Nidwalden shines in three disciplines (downhill, super-G, giant).

After being easily crowned world No.1 in the spring, he left on a crazy basis this winter.

After ten races, he already has nine podiums including four victories and a 271-point lead in the general classification ahead of Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who skipped Monday's race.

In giant, his best discipline historically, Odermatt has only had podiums since the start of last season, ie twelve consecutive races on the world circuit.

He also became Olympic champion in February in Beijing.

He probably found in Italy his greatest rival in the discipline for the winter with Kristoffersen.

The 28-year-old volcanic champion, who has been on the podiums for nine years already, started his winter well with a third podium in four giants.

The Norwegian seems to have adapted perfectly to his new equipment, he who caused an earthquake in the small ski world by joining the brand new brand developed by his former rival Marcel Hirscher this summer.

After a failed season, Alexis Pinturault seems to be raising his head a little with another encouraging result the day after his 4th place on this circuit classic.

"It's positive, everything isn't perfect yet, but I'm making progress and I'm slowly getting closer to the best and I'm gaining consistency. I can go very fast in certain corners but I'm going to have trouble repeating it until the end of the round, that's what I'm still missing," he told the French Ski Federation (FFS).

The other tricolors were disillusioned: the world champion Mathieu Faivre finished 20th (at 3 sec 60), Victor Muffat-Jeandet 22nd (at 3 sec 71) and Cyprien Sarrazin, after having shone in the downhill at Val Gardena, 25th (at 4 sec 29).

The slalomers, without Marco Odermatt therefore, have an appointment Thursday at Madonna di Campiglio (Italy) for a night slalom.
