Angelina Jolie has decided to leave her post as UNHCR's special envoy.
The 47-year-old actress and director has been linked to the UN organization for refugees for more than 20 years.
In a joint statement made public this past Saturday, December 17, Jolie declared that she felt "grateful for the privilege and opportunity" that she has had to work with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees during all this time.
The collaboration between UNHCR and Angelina Jolie began in 2001, but it was a decade later, in 2012, when she was appointed special envoy.
As such, Jolie participated in more than 60 field missions to learn first-hand about the situation in various refugee camps around the world.
Recently, she has traveled to Yemen and Burkina Faso.
“After a long and fruitful collaboration with UNHCR, she applauds her desire to get involved in other areas and, in fact, I support her decision.
I hope our friendship continues," said Filippo Grandi, head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, in the joint statement.
