In Frankfurt, a doner kebab now costs up to ten euros.

According to media reports, Rewe is offering it for 3.50 euros.

But is that true?

Frankfurt – The doner kebab has become a symbol of the crisis in recent weeks.

Rising energy and food prices are putting a massive strain on German wallets this autumn and winter.

Due to the increased costs, the Ton Bull Grill and Kebap house on Töngesgasse in Frankfurt increased the price of its doner kebab to ten euros in October.

"It's not about money, it's about survival," said owner Ugor Yumusakbas at the time.

"If you want to stay in business, you have to offer poor quality or raise the prices." And the quality of the kebab is a priority for Yumusakbas.

The Ton Bull Grill and Kebap House is not an isolated case.

Many kebab shops have drastically increased their prices in recent weeks.

While the price for a doner kebab in many shops before Russia attacked Ukraine was around four euros, you often have to pay seven euros for the flatbread with meat and vegetable filling.

In Frankfurt, the "party" has already called for a kebab price brake due to increased prices.

In view of this development, the news from various media that Rewe was offering a doner kebab for 3.50 euros was surprising.

Doner kebab for 3.50 euros?

"Rewe does not offer a doner kebab for €3.50 and is not planning to do so either!"

According to media reports, the doner kebabs are sold at the food company's hot counter alongside currywurst, schnitzel and cordon bleu, and the low price has ruined the range of small owner-managed shops that sell their doner kebabs, such as the Ton Bull Grill and Kebap house in Frankfurt by Ugor Yumusakbas shows that they would have to sell more expensively.

But does the 3.50 euro kebab from Rewe really exist?

When asked, Thomas Bonrath, press spokesman for the food group, made it clear to fnp.de: "Rewe does not offer a kebab for €3.50 and is not planning to do so either!" If there were such offers, they apparently came from shop-in-shop Providers with whom independent supermarket operators work together.

No large-scale kebab offensive from Rewe, even if the popular flatbread is apparently offered cheaply in some of the supermarket chain's stores.

In times of the energy crisis and rising food prices, the doner kebab, it seems, is still the center of attention.
