The 27 ended up reaching an agreement on the reform of the European carbon market.

The latter takes the form of a carbon tax, the main purpose of which is to put an end to free rights to pollute in order to preserve the competitiveness of European companies in relation to countries whose environmental standards are less demanding.

A tax to limit pollution.

After more than 30 hours of negotiations, European legislators have finally reached an agreement on the reform of the European carbon market, the central component of the European Union's "Green deal" which should make it possible to reduce carbon emissions by 55% 'here in 2030... The 27 gave birth to a single tax in the world, of which Europe 1 details the main lines.

The main principle of this carbon tax is to put an end to free rights to pollute in order to preserve the competitiveness of European companies compared to countries whose environmental standards are less demanding.

Since Sunday, this reform of the carbon market has been extended to heating buildings as well as road and maritime transport.

Households will therefore be impacted.

But to keep it as limited as possible, the European Parliament has worked to regulate it.

From 2027, households will therefore pay a maximum of 45 euros per ton of CO2 emitted, a ceiling guaranteed until 2030. That is a very small increase for French households since the current price is 44 euros per ton.

Its application could also be postponed for a year, in 2028, if the surge in energy prices were to continue.
