By Pete Muntean and Chris Boyette
At least 36 people on a Hawaiian Airlines flight were injured, including 20 taken to emergency rooms, after their plane encountered "severe turbulence" on a flight from Phoenix to Honolulu on Sunday, authorities said.
Eleven patients were in serious condition, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said in a statement.
Among those transported to the hospital was a 14-month-old boy.
The patients' injuries included a serious head injury, lacerations, bruises and loss of consciousness, Honolulu EMS said.
Hawaiian Airlines is "supporting all affected passengers and employees" and monitoring the situation, the company said.
Three crew members were among the injured, according to the airline.
“Multiple guests and crew members were provided medical attention at the airport for minor injuries, while some were quickly transported to local hospitals for further care,” Hawaiian Airlines tweeted.
The turbulence occurred between 15 and 30 minutes before the plane was due to land in Honolulu with 278 passengers and 10 crew members on board.

Paraguay chooses the candidates who will contest the 2023 elections
By Sanie Lopez Garelli
This Sunday, Paraguayan citizens defined their candidates in the primary elections held in the South American country.
The chosen candidates will represent the parties, movements and agreements in the 2023 national elections, where the President of the Republic, congressmen, departmental governors and members of the departmental board will be elected.
According to preliminary official data from the Electoral Court, the candidate for president for 2023 for the ruling Colorado Party will be the economist Santiago Peña.
It is the second time that Peña has run as a candidate for the party in the presidential primaries, but in 2017 he was defeated by the current president Mario Abdo BenĂtez.
Via Twitter, the president congratulated the citizens for their participation in the elections and expressed respect for the popular will.
“Congratulations to all the Paraguayan people and to my beloved Colorado Party.
We recognize and respect the popular will expressed at the polls," the president said on the social network.
Meanwhile, in the main opposition sector, the National Concertation for a New Paraguay, the winning candidate was EfraĂn Alegre.
This is the third consecutive national election for Alegre, who is trying to run for the presidency.
There are other candidates who will fight outside of these two groups, without contesting internal elections.
In the elections this Sunday, the candidates for the two chambers of the National Congress were also defined, as well as for governors of the 17 departments of the country.
According to the data of the Electoral Justice, the internal elections had a participation of 45% within the Colorado Party, while in the National Agreement it was 12.22%.
