Matthieu Valet: "The police wet the jersey during the World Cup to contain the violence"


INTERVIEW – The spokesperson for the Independent Union of Police Commissioners (SICP) regrets the high number of injuries in the ranks of the police.


After the France-Argentina match, 227 people were arrested and around 40 law enforcement officers were injured.

Other incidents had already taken place in previous matches.

What overall assessment can we make of this World Cup in terms of violence?

The police wet the jersey in the street during the third half to contain the urban violence.

There were disturbances to public order throughout the territory, in large cities but also in medium-sized cities, after the matches Morocco - Portugal, France - Morocco and France - Argentina.

If we take these three evenings, there were nearly 700 arrests and around 120 injured in the ranks of the police.

Our colleagues were targeted by mortar fire and projectile throwing.

There was also degraded street furniture (bus shelters, garbage can lights, broken windows).

In Lyon alone, after the France - Argentina final, the police were caught...
