Argentina national team fans celebrate the victory in Buenos Aires (from YouTube)
Lionel Messi didn't just sign his name last night (Sunday) in the history books of football, but also of world sports.
All the pressure was on the shoulders of the flea, but he met challenge after challenge, smashed record after record, and last night completed the greatest achievement of all when he led Argentina to an unforgettable World Cup victory.
As with Maradona: in Buenos Aires they cried for joy.

According to many, the debate regarding the identity of the best footballer of all time is already over - if before the final there was some debate, and Messi's name was mentioned alongside Diego Maradona, now it seems that there is a consensus: the flea above all.
"He's the greatest of all time, we'll never see another player like him," England national team player Declan Rice enthused, and his compatriots Tammy Abraham and James Maddison agreed.
"Those who understand football knew that the result does not matter in the discussion of whether Messi is the greatest ever or not," Madison wrote, "but I am happy that those who did need it, got the proof. Now there is no more discussion."
Jamie Carragher placed Messi first on his list, ahead of Diego Maradona, Pele, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane, while Gary Lineker tweeted: "It's been an absolute pleasure to watch Messi over the last two decades. Mesmerizing moment after mesmerizing moment, delightful football. He's a gift from God Football and I am so happy that he lifted the biggest trophy of all."

But that's not all.
After the drama, quite a few commentators and athletes claimed that Messi is not only the best footballer ever - but also the greatest athlete of all time.
"Is Messi the best athlete ever? I'm not just talking about football" Andy Murray wondered.
The Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro responded and wrote: "He is whatever you want."
Cesc Fabregas agreed: "Leo is the greatest athlete ever."
The one who shared this opinion is the boxer and YouTube star Jake Paul, who tweeted: "It's hard to admit it as an American, but Messi is probably the greatest athlete ever. He is the greatest scorer, the greatest cook, in the sport that is watched by the most people in the world. Muhammad Ali is still Was the athlete with the most influence ever."
The one who is still not unequivocally convinced is one of the most respected football journalists in the world, Henry Winter, who tweeted: "Pela, Maradona, Messi. The three greatest footballers of all time - the only question is in which order."
