Thousands of Sudanese gathered in the streets of Khartoum and other cities of the country yesterday, demanding full civil authority, while the Sudanese security forces used stun grenades and tear gas to disperse protesters who gathered in Khartoum on the fourth anniversary of the uprising that toppled the "Brotherhood regime".

The protests in the capital come two weeks after military leaders signed a preliminary agreement with political parties to return to the process of transition towards democratic elections with international support.

Analysts say the agreement faces major challenges, including limited public support for the civilian signatories, and the postponement of contentious issues, including transitional justice and security forces reform.

Yesterday, the crowd was the largest in months for the protesters who demanded civil rule.

The protesters marched until they were within 1.5 kilometers of the presidential palace.

Police blocked their way with armored trucks, then chased them through the streets.
