The Supreme Court in Stockholm refuses to extradite Bülent Kenes to Turkey. This is exactly what Erdogan had demanded during the negotiations for Sweden's NATO membership.

Sweden's Supreme Court has barred the extradition of an exiled journalist to Turkey.

The court announced on Monday that there were several obstacles to extradition.

The Turkish leadership has accused the journalist Bülent Kenes of being partly responsible for the failed coup attempt in Turkey in 2016 and of being involved in the so-called Gülen movement.

The Swedish Attorney General had previously spoken out against the extradition, and the Supreme Court now followed this line.

Because of the man's political views, there is also a risk of persecution, explained one of the judges involved, Petter Asp. "So extradition cannot take place." opportunity to consent to the extradition request.

Sweden and neighboring Finland had applied for NATO membership in May as part of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

However, NATO member Turkey is blocking the accession of the two Nordic countries and is demanding, among other things, a stronger fight against "terrorists".

Part of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's demands include the extradition of dozens of people.

Bülent Kenes fled to Sweden in 2016 after the coup attempt, where he was granted political asylum.

He was editor-in-chief of the English-language newspaper Today's Zaman, which the Turkish state cracked down on after the attempted coup.

According to the Swedish news agency TT, Kenes was also given a suspended prison sentence seven years ago for allegedly denigrating Erdogan on Twitter.
