A warship capsizes here: A marine filmed his corvette turning on its side off Thailand.
Meter-high waves hit the 960-ton Sukhothai on Monday night.
Dozens of sailors had to climb off the ship onto life rafts in the Gulf of Thailand.
A little later the ship sank.
Footage of the "Royal Thai Navy" filmed from a helicopter shows the ship lying on its side.
Because of the high waves, the only way to search for the castaways is by helicopter or plane.
Local media reports that 78 seafarers have been rescued.
About a dozen soldiers required hospital treatment.
Three people are said to be seriously injured.
Choengchai Chomchoengpaet, Admiral Royal Thai Navy
»We are still missing 31 people.
So far we haven't found any dead bodies during the search."
The incident happened 20 nautical miles off the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan province on Monday night.
Because of the high waves, water got inside the ship, which resulted in a power failure and the main drive failed, it said.
The Sukhothai had more than 100 sailors on board.
The US-built ship has been in service with the Thai Navy since 1987.
