(CNN Spanish) --

After 36 years of waiting, Argentina returned to the highest glory of international soccer by winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

It was a heart attack final against France.

In regulation time, the score was 2-2, with the Europeans scoring their pair of goals in two minutes (80 and 81) thanks to the young star Kylian Mbappé, after Argentina comfortably dominated in the first 79 minutes.

Already in extra time, the now Argentine legend Lionel Messi scored his second goal of the game at minute 109 to put his team ahead;

however, Mbappé scored again at 118, again from a penalty.

Everything had to be defined from the eleven steps, where Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez was once again a figure to give the title to the Albiceleste.

Although he did not set any records here because there are already other players with more matches, it was a historic moment for Messi: not only did he play his thousandth match as a professional, but he also did so in the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar and scored one of the two goals that gave Argentina victory over Australia.

In the Qatar 2022 semifinals, Messi overtook Gabriel Batistuta, better known as "Batigol", as the top Argentine goalscorer in world cups.

Against Croatia, Messi scored one in the game that ended 3-0, bringing the captain to 11 World Cup goals, one more than "Batigol".

With the two in the final against France, the record was 13 goals.

3. More World Cup appearances

The German Lothar Matthaus, who played in five World Cups, had the record for most world cup appearances with 25. However, with the Qatar final against France, Messi surpassed that mark and now holds the record with 26 games.

4. Goal in each phase of the tournament

By scoring in the World Cup final in Qatar, Messi became the first footballer to score a goal in all phases of the tournament: two in the group stage (against Saudi Arabia and Mexico), one in the round of 16 (Australia), one in the quarterfinals (Netherlands), one in the semifinals (Croatia) and two in the final (France).

Likewise, Messi is the first man to score in each knockout phase of a World Cup, a record he shares with the American Carli Lloyd, who achieved it in the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada.

5. The dream came true: Messi lifts the world cup

"WORLD CHAMPIONS. I dreamed of it so many times, I wanted it so much that I haven't fallen yet, I can't believe it," Messi wrote on Instagram after winning the World Cup.

His dream came true and together with "Scaloneta" he was finally able to lift the world cup.

Messi, you did it: you led Argentina to their third world cup.
