The Thai Navy announced today that at least 31 crew members of a Royal Thai Navy warship were missing, due to a storm that led to its sinking in the Gulf of Thailand.
The US news network CNN quoted the Thai Navy as saying in a statement that strong winds tilted the 8.76-meter-long "HTMS Sukhothai" warship, allowing seawater to enter the exhaust pipe and shut down the ship's electrical system.
The statement added that the power outage caused the ship's main power systems to fail, making the crew unable to pump out the sea water that entered the ship, which caused it to sink and the loss of no less than 31 people out of the 106 crew members, while the crew was rescued. 75 more.
For more than three hours, efforts to transport the pumps to Sukhothai from other naval vessels that responded to the incident failed, the statement added.
In turn, the authorities said that the severe weather in the Gulf of Thailand, about 32 km from the Pang Sapan area of Prachuap Khiri Khan province, continued until late this morning, which hindered efforts to search for the missing crew, which is still continuing.
