Incidents of severe violence have recently occurred in schools in Israel, but the ministry does not collect data about them due to the difficulty in determining what constitutes a "case of violence". The last time they tried to establish a uniform criterion was more than a year ago, and in the meantime each district works alone. According to them, there has not been an increase in the number of cases - but only in their severity

Violence in the education system has been increasing in recent weeks with a series of serious cases, but the Ministry of Education does not know at all what the extent of the phenomenon is.

The ministry does not collect the data from the various districts, and each of them has different definitions for a case of violence.

The last time they tried to gather the numbers and establish a uniform criterion was more than a year ago.

The ministry claims that the complexity of the answer to the question of what constitutes a case of violence prevents them from knowing what the numbers are.

According to them, data on the subject is in the hands of the police, but this is only partially true - the police only handle cases that have come to them and turned into an investigation or investigation.

In addition to this, the ministry notes that the severity of the acts is increasing - but their number remains the same.

With this claim, they rely on the climate survey conducted last year in the education system.

According to the questionnaire handed out at the institutions, in Hebrew-speaking elementary schools there was a 4% increase in the level of moderate and severe violence after several years of decline.

In middle schools and high schools, the level remained stable.

Among Arabic speakers, there was stability in elementary schools, an increase in middle schools and a decrease in high schools.

In general, violence is more common in elementary schools - 34% of students in grades 4-5 reported that a student pushed them in the month prior to the survey, compared to 24% in grades 3-9 and 11% in grades 2-11. One in five students in elementary school was beaten , slaps or kicks in the same period of time and 10% of them received threats of physical harm.

Education Minister Yifat Shasha Biton promised to try to address the phenomenon upon assuming office.

Last year, she announced a new program to combat violence in the education system, "Don't Raise Your Hands - Come in Good," which received a budget of NIS 438 million and included various projects in schools.

"The hour of our test has come - to eradicate violence and allow every student an empowering and protected learning environment," said Shasha Biton.

Later, the programs were integrated into the GFN system for managing the budgets of educational institutions.

The unsatisfactory results were seen in a series of incidents across the country last week. On Tuesday, a 16-year-old boy was stabbed on the school grounds in Rehovot and was taken to the hospital in serious condition. According to his friends, masked men chased him to the office The principal, and broke the door when he tried to keep it closed. Following the incident, Shasha Beaton ordered to stop regular classes the next day and devote the first hour to a discourse on violence.

Nevertheless, the violence continued.

In Lod, girls in the 8th grade attacked another student with punches, kicks and hair pulling after she "said a word out of place".

The girl's mother said that she needed medical treatment in the emergency room.

In Ashdod, a 13-year-old asked his friends to take a picture - and hit another student hard, even after he fell to the floor.

The latest case happened this morning (Sunday) in Netanya, when a 16-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed by his peer and was slightly injured.

The Ministry of Education has yet to respond.
