For many seniors, the pension is barely enough to live on.
But how much money do Germans actually receive on average?
Frankfurt – For many employees, retirement means one thing above all: poverty in old age.
According to the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, every fifth person drawing a pension has less than 500 euros a month at their disposal.

According to its own information, the German pension insurance paid out around 858,000 old-age pensions in 2021, including old-age pensions for long-term insured persons.
Around 700,000 pensions were paid out in the old federal states and almost 158,000 in the new ones.
On average, women receive less pension than men.

Differences in monthly payment were mainly recorded between women and men.
But there were also clear shifts between the old and new federal states.
The pension amount is to be understood less the contribution to the statutory health and nursing care insurance.

Pension: Those who have been insured for many years in particular receive significantly more
As can also be seen from the statistics of the German pension insurance, in 2021 those who were insured for a particularly long time received significantly more money.
In the old federal states, men received an average of 1664 euros after 45 years of contributions, women 1220 euros.
In the new ones, on the other hand, men received an average of 1350 euros and women 1286 euros.
Not all of the insured reached 45 years of contributions.
In 2021, women and men from the old federal states in particular were furthest away from this on average.

On average, women receive less pensions – what is behind it
The difference that women – both in West and East – receive less pension on average and have shorter contribution periods is the subject of many studies.

But the choice of career is also important.
"Women choose social professions more often, which means that they earn fewer pension entitlements than men due to the lower pay for these professions," said the expert in an interview.
Another reason is that women often work part-time after parental leave and therefore have poorer opportunities for advancement.
