The governor of the Kyiv region, Oleksiy Kuleba, says there is a drone attack.
Nine Shahed drones from Iran are said to have been shot down in Kiev airspace.
"Air alert continues in Kyiv," the military said on Telegram.
"The enemy is attacking the capital with 'Shahed' barrage.
The air defense is deployed.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has regretted that the world football governing body FIFA turned down a request for a message of peace ahead of the World Cup final in Qatar.
Zelenskyy's military, meanwhile, fear that Russia could possibly launch a new wave of missiles against Ukraine's infrastructure for the New Year celebrations.
Selenskyj: The world heard our message anyway
Zelenskyy said in his daily video message on Sunday evening that although FIFA prevented this call for peace from being shown in the stadium before the final in Qatar, "the world heard our message".
The world association had denied having received a request from Ukraine.
The final between France and Argentina was an emotional final, Zelenskyj said.

Ukraine fears Russian missiles for New Year
The Ukrainian military leadership fears new Russian missile attacks at the turn of the year.
As army spokesman Yuri Ignat explained on Sunday, it cannot be ruled out that the enemy will "congratulate" in this way at the end of the year.
"They have a clear plan in which they have laid down priority goals." The aim is to damage Ukraine as much as possible.
"And depending on where it hurts us the most, that's where they'll aim, as mean, as bold and as painful as possible," Ignat was quoted as saying by the Unian state agency.
In addition, the date of the next attacks will be set "to please the dictator (Vladimir Putin)".
But the attacks at the turn of the year were also intended to appeal to the “internal audience”, i.e. the Russian population.
The Russian military has been using a new tactic for several weeks now and is targeting Ukraine's energy supply network with rockets and cruise missiles.

Kyiv: Russian ammunition dumps and anti-aircraft systems destroyed
