While yesterday was still deepest winter, a change in the weather is now supposed to ensure a warmer and milder climate.
It is questionable whether a white Christmas will come.
Munich – Some Munich residents have become accustomed to the robust covering of snow and ice on the road and sidewalk.
The temperatures remain below zero for an unusually long time and ensure a wintry sight as well as black ice and dangerous slippery sections.
However, on Tuesday 20th December the weather takes a sharp turn and is heading towards a milder climate.
With clouds, wind and rain, the temperature is expected to climb to five to 13 degrees during the day and melt the ice and snow surfaces.
Until the situation on the streets relaxes, however, the German Weather Service (DWD) advises patience and caution.
Change in weather: the ground is deeply frozen – ice and snow are slowly giving way to mild temperatures
Despite slight plus degrees, it takes a while before these become noticeable, according to the DWD.
Side streets and their footpaths and cycle paths are often life-threatening areas of snow and ice that should be avoided.
Spreading and clearing services are still in use on the main traffic routes.

"Fresh weather conditions" - Despite plus degrees, experts advise caution
Although the temperature is already a few degrees above zero, the ground is still frozen centimeters deep.
Meanwhile, warm air has already settled in the higher air layers, so-called weather situation inversions.
This leads to rain, which in turn suddenly freezes on the icy ground - "a highly dangerous weather situation" for the weather experts.
Northern Bavaria, especially Franconia, already has this phenomenon firmly under control.
The DWD has therefore issued official warnings for Monday, December 19, because of the "risk of slippery roads with potential for danger from freezing rain".
In the north-west of the country, ice rain is also expected to affect traffic during the day.
Bayern will probably be spared the latter.
Wind gusts and T-shirt temperatures on Christmas Eve - unlikely to snow
According to forecasts by the DWD, the trend towards a mild climate will not stop in the second half of the week until Christmas.
On December 24, the weather institute expects up to 15 degrees in some regions of Bavaria - temperatures that were actually only expected again in March.
Double-digit plus degrees are also expected in Munich on December 24th.
However, you should keep your thick jackets to hand.
According to the weather forecast, the almost spring-like climate has a "high potential for storms" with strong gusts of up to 100 km/h.
According to the DWD, a white Christmas will be “extremely difficult” this year, even in the somewhat colder north of Germany.
However, a new cold spell cannot be completely ruled out.
At the latest after Christmas Eve, weather forecasts indicate that temperatures will drop again.
