  • Díaz's group of experts defends raising the Minimum Wage between 4.6% and 8.2% as of January

Yolanda Díaz

, second vice president and Minister of Labor, presented this Monday the

report

prepared by the

Advisory Commission for the Analysis of the SMI

, which recommends raising it from 1,000 to a range of between

1,046 and 1,082

euros in fourteen payments in 2023, but He has stated that he does not rule out

reviewing it again in six months

, around June, to see if it has become obsolete depending on how

inflation

evolves .

"We contemplate that we can

review the Minimum Interprofessional Wage after six months

depending on the evolution of

inflation

," Díaz stated at a press conference, in which he assured that he does not lean towards either of the two extremes of the fork.

"

I am not inclined towards any strip of the fork

and until I sit at the social dialogue table I am not going to take any position and we are going to actively listen to the social agents. I know what the request of the unions is, who are asking for 1,100 euros , and I know what the bosses want. I only ask the social agents to comply with their constitutional mandate and come to the table to work, to have high visions and work for the country".

The

Advisory Commission for the Analysis of the SMI

has concluded that for the SMI to reach

60% of the average salary in Spain in 2022

it should go up to a maximum of

1,082 euros in fourteen payments

and, at least, up to

1,046 euros

, as it has advanced this Monday THE WORLD, from the 1,000 euros in fourteen payments in which it is currently.

They also give two intermediate figures,

1,054 and 1,066 euros.

Given that the increase will take effect in

2023

, the group believes that

two important elements

should be taken into account : on the one hand, that the calculation of the SMI for 2023 has been made taking as reference the

estimate of the average salary for 2022 and not the 2023

, "which can reasonably be expected to be higher" and, on the other hand,

inflation

, which especially affects the purchasing power of workers who receive the SMI.

Precisely the rise in prices, which so far this year stands at

8.6%,

is one of the arguments used by the Commission to

justify a new increase in the SMI,

which since 2018 has accumulated a rise of 36%.

This Commission was formed by herself in 2021 when she was in full confrontation with the Ministry of Economy led by Nadia Calviño due to the rise in the SMI for that year, and

Víctor Ausín

, general director of Macroeconomic Affairs of the

Ministry of Finance, participates in it, among others.

economy

.

The unions also have representatives in the group, unlike the employers who decided not to participate.

On Wednesday he meets with CEOE and unions

Once the report is received, the minister

will sit down to negotiate this Wednesday with the CEOE and the unions, UGT and CCOO,

although it is not necessary for her to reach an agreement with them, since the Executive only has the obligation to consult them about the rise in the SMI without the need for them to agree with it.

"They point us to a fork. This is how I receive it and this is how I already indicate that

this Wednesday we will convene the social dialogue table

to carry out the constitutional tasks that correspond to the social agents in our country. We will listen to the parties and we will make the best decisions", has pointed.

The minister has still taken the opportunity to

send a message to the CEOE,

which last week threatened to abandon the dialogue with the Ministry for what it considers a "betrayal", as Díaz's department had agreed to an amendment with

Bildu

that in his opinion modifies what was agreed at the dialogue table on the labor reform.

He has asked

them to "think high" and "to do their job and sit at the table to negotiate",

taking into account "that people are having a hard time".

Inmaculada Cebrián,

president of the Commission, has recognized that calculating the average salary in Spain continues to be "a

complex exercise,

full of uncertainty, which makes it difficult to calculate and estimate";

For this reason, he has asked for better statistics and that access to information sources be improved ", a claim that Díaz has promised to transfer to the rest of the Executive.

"Their rigor makes the Government of Spain make better public decisions. With the work they have prepared, we are going to have more solidity in decision-making," the minister thanked the Commission, who has defended that "

the rise in the SMI is a success story"

because it has contributed to reducing inequality.

Díaz took the opportunity to recall that, despite the rise in the SMI, "employment has grown among

young people

and among

women

", two of the groups in which this indicator has the greatest incidence and on which there was fear that it would slow down job creation.
