This is also for security reasons.

After the gold coin robbery in Manching and because of the attacks by radical climate protection groups, there is a lot of discussion about security in museums.

What is the security concept in the Tölz City Museum?

Bad Tölz – The burglary of the Celtic-Roman Museum in Manching, in which 2000-year-old gold coins were stolen, caused great horror.

"It also shook us in Tölz," says Elisabeth Hinterstocker, director of the Tölz City Museum.

Hinterstocker suspects that thieves are increasingly turning their attention to objects that have a high material value: i.e. things that can be ground or melted down in order to then be able to sell them undetected.

"When you steal pictures, there's usually a client who wants the item in their home," says Hinterstocker.

World-famous paintings cannot simply be resold.

Hinterstocker fears that the gold coins from Manching "will definitely be melted down".

Tölzer Museum is monitored 24 hours a day

Of course, the details of the security concept in the Tölz City Museum are not revealed.

"We have an alarm system that consists of various components and that works day and night," says Brita Hohenreiter.

The spa director is also present when we talk to our newspaper in the museum.

The system is monitored 24 hours a day by a specialist company, and it is also in direct contact with the police.

"False alarms have shown again and again that it works," says Hohenreiter with a smile.

A museum must also protect itself against robberies.

"We always keep the till and safe stocks low," says Hohenreiter, referring to a branch of the tourist information center in the museum.

Criticism of Actions of the "Last Generation"

At the moment, however, museums also have to arm themselves against radical climate protectionists of the “last generation” who smear paintings with tomato soup or mashed potatoes.

"What can Leonardo da Vinci do to change our climate?" says Hinterstocker, shaking his head.

“Tomato soup in paintings is pointless.

And such actions don't help the climate either." Instead, immense damage is caused to the cultural heritage of mankind.

"Because the 'last generation' is not the last generation." Hohenreiter shares the same view: "With all due respect for the opinions of others: Destroying things that belong to others contradicts my basic understanding," she says.

The two would find it much more useful if the group would draw attention to themselves with actions,

Visitors with house ban

Are the museum employees now paying more attention to “suspicious” visitors?

"Our employees are generally trained to pay attention to such things," says Hinterstocker.

Then “a certain information chain” starts within the house.

In previous years, visitors in museums behaved unusually.

That's why people have already been banned from entering the Stadtmuseum.

But Hinterstocker also says: “There is never absolute security in a museum.” Large bags and rucksacks have to be stowed away in lockers anyway.

Hinterstocker and Hohenreiter think little of hiring more security forces.

"It's also about feeling comfortable in a museum," says Hohenreiter.

That certainly doesn't work if, as a "normal visitor", you feel like you're being followed at every turn.

In addition, the entrance fees would quickly increase due to larger staff deployment.

"All of that has to be considered."

Passage will be closed on New Year's Eve

Incidentally, the passage through the museum will be closed again over New Year's Eve.

However, what annoys pedestrians on the way from Schloßplatz to Marktstraße has safety reasons: Because in the past few years, strangers have repeatedly set off Chinese firecrackers - they resonate strongly there - the alarm system was repeatedly triggered with the consequence that the fire brigade had to come.

Peace has returned since the lockdown.
