A man who was recorded violently beating another man in a supermarket in Jerusalem three and a half years ago and accused of assault, has reached a plea agreement with the police according to which he will admit to what is attributed to him but will pay compensation of only NIS 1,000 - this is what Vala learned today (Tuesday).

According to the indictment, in May 2019 Moshe Rivlin and two other defendants attacked the victim in the Mea Shearim neighborhood of the capital, after an argument with him outside the store, against the background of a complaint filed against their relative for sexual offenses.

The victim fled into the store and hid in the aisles, but one of the defendants recognized him and called out to his friends, "Here he is," while pointing at him.

Rivlin arrived at the scene and threw a shopping basket at the complainant, while it tried to escape from his hands.

Rivlin was joined by another accused who forcefully kicked the victim and threw him while he was hit by the stand of the cash register in the grocery store and fell to the floor.

While lying on the ground, Rivlin returned to the scene and began hitting him with a shopping basket.

The three fled the scene only when one of the store's employees noticed what was happening and called out to them.

Following the violent attack, the victim suffered pain in the rib area for several days.

Last month, 3.5 years after the incident, a conditional settlement was signed between the claims unit of the Jerusalem District Police and Rivlin's defense attorney, Adv. He will also undertake to refrain from committing a crime in the next six months. In return, Rivlin will admit to what is attributed to him and the case against him will be closed under the pretext of "closing a case in an arrangement".

The conditional settlement procedure allows the police and the prosecutor's office as of 2013 to avoid filing an indictment and to exhaust proceedings based on the charge, in cases where the maximum penalty is less than three years in prison, the accused has no criminal record in the five years preceding the commission of the offense and in the opinion of the prosecution there is no need for a punishment that includes actual imprisonment against the accused.

The criminal defense attorney, Adv. Avihai Hajabi, who represented the defendant, responded: "In the context of the negotiations between the claims department and me, significant evidentiary difficulties were raised that did not receive an answer and expression in the evidence.

As a result, the indictment was canceled and the procedure ended with a conditional settlement."
