A conductor who has something to say - and not only in rehearsals, but also in concert: This is how the performance of Martin Wiblishauser from the Knappschafts- und Trachtenkapelle Peiting at the two traditional Christmas concerts can be described.

Peiting

– Last Sunday evening at 10:50 p.m.: The first of two Christmas performances by the Peiting Knappschafts- und Trachtenkapelle Peiting comes to an end.

The next date is next Sunday evening, i.e. on Christmas Day, again at 8 p.m. in the Schloßberghalle.

Yes, the concert has gone long.

But it has been an entertaining evening.

On the contrary: the Kapellmeister put together a program and rehearsed it with the 50 wind players that meets three criteria: it is demanding, varied and was well received by the 250 or so visitors to the first concert.

Happy about new wind classes

The 50-strong ensemble – compared to pre-Corona times there are significantly fewer instrumentalists – enters the program with the military march “Zur Große Wachparade” by Stefan Schwalgin.

The fanfares in the trumpet horns are striking, the sudden key changes interesting, the dynamics of the band robust, although the mood in the wood register and especially the flutes at the start allows "air up".

An impressive work is the "English Folk Song Suite" with its three movements, which Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote 100 years ago.

English folk songs, which are less well known in this country, sound out.

The prelude with the piccolo is clever, the oboe solo, which leads to the second part, is soft and delicate, and the third movement is cheerful and funny.

Emotional study

After being welcomed by music director Franz Multerer, who is happy about the newly installed wind instruments classes at the two local elementary schools, and after the first brief but precise announcements by Lena Wolf and Christopher Huber, Martin Wiblishauser grabs the microphone.

With good reason: it introduces the next work, so to speak.

They are paraphrases about "Good luck, the climber is coming".

For the encore, some brass players from the Knappschaftskapelle (back) have joined.

It was written by Marcus Graf from Schongau, head of the Pfaffenwinkel music school and conductor of the Schongau town band from 1996 to 2019.

He was a fellow student of Wiblishauser.

The rehearsal of the work, which this year was already performed by the Musikbund's selection orchestra, was "a journey" from the rehearsal to the performance in the concert, on which there were many emotional voices.

Also critical, the conductor admits in his preceding explanatory piece.

But there was "so much to discover," he adds.

Youth band plays four pieces

The well-known piece "Glück auf, der Steiger geht" is not only formative for mine types, but can also be understood globally.

The solidarity of the miners is pronounced worldwide: That is why the melody is brought into different styles, from revue music to jazz, oriental sounds, with Bavarian character and also with waltz sounds.

Then the genre is changed: The piece "The Devils Rag" by Rudolf Heidler follows.

The orchestra accompanies the soloist Philipp Remmele on the saxophone with great enthusiasm.

The runs in flutes and clarinets are witty and lively.

The march "Hands across the Sea" by Siegfried Rundel led into the break.

From Armenian dances to hits from the 80's

After the restart, the Peiting/Hohenpeissenberg youth band will play four pieces – conducted alternately by Magdalena Schleich and Martin Wiblishauser.

They are the titles "12 the Clock Strikes" by Rob Grice, the Hebrew melody "Hatikvah = Hope", the potpourri "The Young Christmas Concert" by Alfred Bösendorfer and the encore "Drums of Corona".

In the second section, the 250 or so visitors were initially moved by Alfred Reed's Armenian Dances.

After a brief introduction with a bagpipe player (Christopher Huber, but without the kilt), Frank Ticheli's “Amazing Grace” sounds.

It continues with Philip Sparke's “Klezmer Carnival”, before Thiemo Krass' medley “80s Cult Tour” brings back memories of the Neue Deutsche Welle.

For example, when the trombones in the hit "Skandal im Sperrgebiet" give full sound or the "A thousand times touched" is intoned by everyone in a rich double forte.

As an encore, the sovereign and affable conductor also comes up with an (explanatory) piece: before the final march “Glück auf …” the Knappschaft and Trachten band plays “Christmas for a Night”.

This is not a potpourri of tired Christmas carols, but a polka-style arrangement.

Looking at Pastor Dirk Wollenweber, Martin Wiblishauser says: “We could preach with our concert.

We would have so many thoughts."

Sentences by a conductor who also has something to say in the concert.
