Shortly before Christmas Eve, chaos erupts again at Munich Airport.

Thousands of suitcases are stranded again - to the annoyance of many passengers.

Munich – A nice gift: Shortly before Christmas there is suitcase chaos at Munich Airport again.

According to information from our newspaper, thousands of pieces of luggage are piled up in the warehouses and on transport trolleys.

Responsible are freezing rain and snow of the past few days.

“Because of the extreme winter weather, airlines have had to cancel many flights in recent days.

As a result, numerous pieces of luggage were left behind," said the airport at the request of our newspaper.

As a reminder: 240 flights had to be canceled last Wednesday alone, and around 100 the next day. There were also numerous delays.

Again suitcase chaos at Munich Airport

An informant who reports on the conditions estimates that around 15,000 suitcases were left behind as a result.

"Since the processing of the baggage is the responsibility of the airlines and their service providers, we cannot put a figure on this," the airport said.

Lufthansa does not have any exact figures either.

However, she assumes "that the majority of the suitcases can be attributed to Lufthansa passengers," according to a spokeswoman.

The Munich and Frankfurt airports only made headlines in the summer because leftover suitcases were piling up in their thousands.

The reason was the first major wave of travel to Corona on the one hand and a lack of staff at the companies commissioned with loading and unloading on the other.

Some of those affected had to wait several weeks for their luggage.

In the current case, the lack of staff and flight cancellations were compounded by the fact that the baggage service providers themselves "due to the weather could not load and unload as quickly as usual," explains the Lufthansa spokeswoman.

Chaos just before Christmas: staff shortages and flight cancellations at Munich Airport

Well, just before the holidays, working through could be difficult again.

Due to the high number of passengers, the Christmas holidays are one of the main travel times of the year (see info box) and involve a lot of work.

Munich Airport says: "The airlines and their service providers are currently working flat out to deal with the high volume of baggage." Lufthansa asks its passengers to report the loss of the piece of baggage as soon as possible via the airline's website in order to speed up the process .

1.3 million passengers during the holidays

Christmas time is high season: Between December 23rd and January 8th, the airlines list almost 11,000 flights to 150 destinations worldwide for Munich Airport.

At Flughafen München GmbH and its subsidiaries, up to 800 employees are on duty on Christmas Eve alone, the airport reports.

The airport then expects up to 1.3 million passengers.

Most flights go to Spain during the holidays with around 450 departures, followed by Italy (430) and France (300).

Greece and Portugal follow (117 each).

In long-distance travel, 290 departures to the USA and Canada are scheduled for North America.

123 times serve airlines

Destinations in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

34 flights each go to Bangkok and Singapore, twelve to Seoul in South Korea.
