Data from the speed cameras installed in Bordeaux reveal that many motorists do not respect speed limits at all.

Bordeaux, pedestrian city, cycling city, and city of speeders?

Between December 19 and 20, 16 people drove at 100 km/h or more in streets which are nevertheless limited to 30 km/h.

This is revealed by the data available to the public, from the educational radars installed by Bordeaux Métropole at the request of the town hall.

Stunning figures that reveal "

unacceptable risky behavior

", deplores Didier Jeanjean, deputy mayor in charge of nature in the city and peaceful neighborhoods.

Because since 2022, nearly 90% of the streets of Bordeaux are limited to 30km / h.

Only the main structuring axes, the boulevards and the quays, remain at 50km/h.

The statements on the single day of December 19, however, show that few motorists respect this standard.

Of the 37,883 vehicles registered between one o'clock in the morning on December 19 and the same time the next day, 26,265 had a speed greater than 30 km/h, i.e. nearly 70% of motorists.

Of the nine radars whose data is available online, seven of them report a median speed greater than 30 km/h: more than half of motorists exceeded the authorized limit.

Worse still, in front of the radar installed on rue Georges Mandel, 75% of vehicles are traveling at speeds above 30 km/h.

The maximum speed measured on this axis on Monday was even 135 km / h.

The radar installed rue Jacques Nancy, along the Saint Bruno school, recorded a record of 163km / h.

This blatant incivility mainly takes place at night, between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The 30km / h "is not a miracle solution"

These educational radars are devices installed by Bordeaux Métropole "

at the request of the city in areas where residents complain about speed, so not necessarily in zones 30

".

However, the community specifies that these installations “

do not presage real radars

”, which are the responsibility of the State and remain rare in urban areas.

If it depended on the municipality, it would have been in place for a long time

”, specifies Didier Jeanjean, who campaigns for the city of Bordeaux to be equipped with real radars.

The elected official underlines the usefulness of these educational radars, but specifies that "

if they have an impact, it is not sufficient to limit speeding

".

For him, “

speed in the city is not a tool that should be taken independently of all the others

”.

The elected official indeed advocates the implementation of a "

policy of appeasement of the districts

".

According to Didier Jeanjean, the speed limit must be considered together with limited sectors (as recently at the Chartrons), road signs, the development of priorities on the right, the removal of intersections with traffic lights and the signage of contraflow cycle paths .

It is "

all these cumulative measures which have an effect on speed

", explains the elected official, for whom the limitation to 30km / h "

is not a miracle solution

", especially if it is decorrelated from other measures.

The deputy mayor finally specifies that the municipality is fighting against these incivilities of motorists by redeveloping the structures of the street, with in particular more vegetation, which limits visibility and therefore speed.

"

Today, we no longer restructure a street without planting and without protecting the pedestrian crossings

", welcomes Didier Jeanjean.

We cannot do all the streets in two years, but we have already done a lot and we have to continue.
