As everywhere in France, the Alpes-Maritimes department faced an exceptional drought situation in 2022 with a very shortfall in the department's water recharge season over the entire territory.
Several records have thus been broken: the low water period, for example, was the hottest ever recorded in the department, and the period from September 2021 to August 2022 (hydrological year) is the driest ever known since the first measurements in 1959. Precipitation remained in deficit during the months of September, October and November, before beginning to rise in December.
Cracks in the walls, doors that no longer open or do not open very well, fear of a landslide: after this phenomenon, more and more people from Nice are reporting disorders in their homes to the City.
It is for this reason that the municipality has decided to submit a request for classification as a natural disaster with the State services, in order to obtain compensation funds.
A procedure which should last several months before the decision and the publication of the decree which could intervene
“by the end of the first half of 2023”
, indicates the town hall.

In addition, for this request to have the best chance of succeeding,
"it is important to have as many reports as possible"
.
The City of Nice therefore invites residents who notice cracks or gaps after the drought period, to come forward and send the necessary documents (address where the problems are found; photos and description of the problems and contact details of the person who submits the request) to a dedicated email address, available on the town hall website.
