The beds are set up, the floor is laid: The district gymnasium in Tegernsee is available as emergency accommodation for refugees.

Sport is no longer possible in it.

High school is particularly hard hit.

Tegernsee

– Director Werner Oberholzer is at a loss.

And also a bit desperate.

The head of the Tegernsee Gymnasium had known for a long time that the district sports hall in Tegernsee would not be used for physical education classes because it was urgently needed to accommodate refugees.

Therefore he had worked on an alternative solution.

"And we actually had a wonderful plan," says Oberholzner.

Thanks to the support from many quarters, the grammar school could have switched to the hall of the Rottach-Egern middle school and the Realschule in Finsterwald for a large part of its sports lessons.

But this variant fails because of another well-known problem: "There are no buses to get," says Oberholzner.

Missing buses: no physical education classes in other halls in the valley

As is well known, the bus companies are struggling with a massive personnel problem.

The Regionalverkehr Oberbayern (RVO) could no longer serve some of its lines in the district this year because it lacked the necessary drivers.

Physical education classes elsewhere fail because the high school students cannot get from A to B.

Despite all the efforts of the headmaster and the district office, which had tried to acquire buses.

Some of the high school students can switch to the municipal hall and the medius

So Oberholzner's only option is to take some of his students to the city's simple hall and to the Tegernseer Medius - but this by no means covers all of the physical education classes.

At least the upper school, in whose ranks there are also students who do sports high school in the spring, can thus be supplied.

Otherwise, Oberholzner speaks of a tricky situation for which there is ultimately no one to blame, but which is still "very, very annoying".

District in desperate situation: capacity for accommodation exhausted

The district itself is currently in a situation that is no less desperate. New asylum seekers and war refugees from the Ukraine are constantly being assigned to it, although its accommodation – like other districts in Upper Bavaria – has long since reached its limits.

The district gym in Tegernsee will probably also be occupied shortly.

"All other options have been exhausted," reports Sabine Kirchmair, spokeswoman for the district office.

Around 200 people can be temporarily accommodated in the hall.

"The next assignments have already been announced for this week," explains Kirchmair.

The district office only finds out how many people arrive and where they come from at short notice.

District office spokeswoman: The gym was prepared under high pressure

As in 2015/2016, when the district gym in Tegernsee was converted into emergency accommodation during the large wave of refugees, the district had to equip the hall with beds, partitions and a floor covering.

According to Kirchmair, sanitary containers have also been ordered and will soon be put into operation in the hall.

"The accommodation was prepared under high pressure," reports the spokeswoman.

Also on Monday (December 19th) one was still busy with remaining work in Tegernsee.

Kirchmair is aware that the situation is extremely modest both for the school sports of the high school and for the sports clubs that hold their indoor training here.

"But we had no other choice."

Meanwhile, efforts continue to organize buses for the high school, which take the students to other school gyms.

"But I'm no longer particularly optimistic," says Oberholzner.

Sports clubs also have to look for other training opportunities.
