Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, considered that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Western countries are trying to justify Washington's disavowal of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the nuclear agreement with Iran and its withdrawal from it in 2018.

The Novosti agency quoted Nebenzia as saying during a meeting of the UN Security Council yesterday devoted to the issue of implementing Resolution (2231), which approved the comprehensive action plan: “We can note the same serious deficiency in the semi-annual report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations regarding the implementation of Security Council Resolution No. (2231), where He practically equalizes the actions of the United States and Iran, and everyone has begun to get the impression that the West and Guterres are trying to justify Washington's exit from the deal, which creates a distorted image, as if this agreement began to collapse on its own or to portray that Tehran is responsible from the beginning for its disruption and it is The most absurd thing.”

Nebenzia continued: “It is unfortunate that the (2231 formation) coordinator in his speech did not directly refer to the well-known root cause of the current problems with the JCPOA, namely, the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the agreement in 2018, and the subsequent violation of its provisions, including the imposition of sanctions.” unilaterally against Iran.

The Russian delegate stressed that the talk should not revolve around providing exceptions and exemptions, but rather about the complete abolition of illegal sanctions imposed by the United States against Iran in violation of Resolution 2231, and said: “From the report of the Secretary-General, a false impression may arise that the exemptions will be sufficient.”

Nebenzia warned that the pressure imposed on Iran could cause a disruption of the revival of the nuclear agreement signed in 2015, and added: “We do not see insurmountable problems that prevent the restoration of the nuclear agreement, yet we find ourselves at a critical juncture, as attempts to put pressure on Iran, unjustified escalating tensions, and fabricated attacks.” To provoke the other parties would completely negate the prospects for restoring the nuclear deal.”

It is noteworthy that the United States, Russia, China, France, Germany, Britain and the European Union had signed the nuclear agreement with Iran in 2015, and Washington withdrew unilaterally from the agreement in 2018, and re-imposed comprehensive sanctions on Iran.

In another context, regarding the allegations of “Iran providing Russia with drones for use in Ukraine,” Nebenzia reaffirmed that these accusations are false, fabricated, and unfounded.
