The Russian ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, confirmed that Ottawa's decision to confiscate the assets of Russian businessman Roman Abramovich on its territory is a flagrant violation of the right of ownership.
“This is robbery and another confirmation that the sanctity of private property in Canada and other Western countries no longer exists, and such actions defame Canada’s reputation and show everyone that if the West is not satisfied with specific people, their assets and accounts will be confiscated,” Novosti agency quoted Stepanov as saying. .
Stepanov stated that such actions by Ottawa are an additional signal to Russian business that Canada is a dangerous region, pointing out that the Russian embassy does not recommend commercial or economic cooperation with Canada in the foreseeable future.
And the Canadian Foreign Ministry announced earlier that Abramovich’s assets had begun to be frozen before they were confiscated as part of the illegal Western economic sanctions against Russia.
