The Pizzeria Colosseum in Herrsching has been around for 50 years.

The restaurant owners have their guests to thank for the fact that the restaurant is doing so well despite its ups and downs.

Herrsching – 50 years ago, the Pizzeria Colosseum moved into Herrsching's Bahnhofstraße 5 with a pizza oven and original Italian recipes.

A courageous project, because at that time stews and potato dishes dominated German kitchens.

"We were the first pizzeria in the district," says Raffaele Carapacchio (79) proudly.

As is so often the case, coincidence led the way when it was founded.

Strictly speaking, an advertisement that the trained carpenter and his wife Erika read in the newspaper.

Shortly thereafter, the contract was signed and the once cool counter room of the Sparkasse was transformed into a piece of Italy.

Since then, the rooms have been a place for birthdays, weddings, communions or Christmas parties.

Not infrequently, newly in love crept into one of the niches.

The 79-year-old tells us that they came after they had exchanged vows and first added one, two and three children and later grandchildren to the group.

Mayor Christian Schiller, who has fond childhood memories of the pizzeria, is also a long-standing, loyal guest.

"As soon as I saved 40 pfennigs, I bought a scoop of ice cream at the Colosseum," says Schiller.

With the opening of the restaurant, the residents of Herrsching were able to revive their holiday memories with culinary delights.

Already on the first day, the chef put pizzas in the oven in unison.

"We never had a crisis," says Carapacchio happily.

Not even after the euro changeover, when some restaurants got into trouble.

"I converted the prices to the cent," Carapacchio explains the fortunate circumstance.

The guests would have appreciated that.

Vincenzo Sgrò took over the Pizzeria Colosseum eight years ago

Carapacchio opened the “Gelateria Al Porto” on Summerstrasse 35 years ago.

Vincenzo Sgrò (60) worked there from 1988 – the waiter met and fell in love with his wife Katarina in the shop.

They married and took over the pizzeria eight years ago - and, in line with old tradition, serve their regular guests a free glass of prosecco and bruschetta as an aperitif.

The reason why the restaurant has survived all the ups and downs of the past five decades is because of the customers, emphasize the couple and Carapacchio: "We would like to thank them very much." have borne the pandemic.

And that, although they could not handle a delivery service.

The menu has always featured changing dishes.

The pizza with buffalo mozzarella, mortadella, cherry tomatoes and pistachio cream is currently the big hit.

Carapacchio is also a regular guest.

Because even if he has given up the management: "The pizzeria is my child," he says.

It is unlikely that the Sgrò couple will run the shop for another 50 years.

"But maybe one day our son Paolo will take over the restaurant," says Sgra, looking at the ten-year-old, who has sat down at the next table to do his homework.
