The flight tracking platform flightradar24 showed that United Airlines UA2831 kept circling in the waters off Lamma Island, suspected to be releasing fuel.

The Fire Department dispatched 5 ambulances on alert, and police officers also attended the scene to assist.


According to the police, a report was received at 11:07 a.m. that flight UA2831 had to turn back to Hong Kong International Airport in an emergency. The police and firefighters will be on guard at the airport.

The flight landed safely, initially believed to involve an engine problem, and there were no dangerous goods on board.

The incident died down at 11:57am.

The Civil Aviation Department replied that a United Airlines cargo flight (flight number UAL2831) took off from Hong Kong International Airport for Guam at about 10:47 this morning. During the flight, it was suspected that due to engine system problems, it had to turn back and land at Hong Kong International Airport.

After receiving the pilot's notification, the Civil Aviation Department immediately followed the established procedures, notified the airport fire brigade and the Airport Authority to be on alert, and arranged for the plane to land safely at about 11:39 am.

During the incident, CAD has not received any reports of injuries.

CAD will follow up the incident with the airline concerned and its aircraft registration authority.

The Airport Authority stated that it received a report at about 11:00 a.m. that United Airlines flight UA2831 originally scheduled to fly from Hong Kong to Guam needed to turn back and asked the airport to be on alert when it landed. The flight then landed safely at 11:45 a.m. Airport operations will not be affected.
