"Bad Bayersoien in Flammen" enjoys a good reputation among locals and guests alike.

But a pyro show in times of the climate crisis - a few councilors from Bad Bayersoien have a problem with that.

Bad Bayersoien - The sky above the Soier See is lit up in all colors.

Bengal fires bathe him in red light.

Music sounds to match.

"Bad Bayersoien in Flammen" is a spectacle that attracts thousands of visitors every two years - with the exception of pandemic times.

In 2023, the event is scheduled to take place again after the forced break - on August 4th (alternative date August 5th or 6th).

But in the background it is bubbling, the fireworks are criticized.

Concerns have now been voiced in the council.

Actually, the committee should simply release the financial resources for the event.

Specifically 20,000 euros.

Money was always set aside in the budget for planning security.

This time the subject came up before the budget deliberations.

"It's the highest railway to get into the planning," said Mayor Gisela Kieweg (FBB).

But the debate did not come as a surprise to her.

That is why the head of the town hall had already asked the district office in advance whether the fireworks could be approved at all.

She received an affirmative answer.

Concerns are raised

From an official point of view, nothing stands in the way of the play of colors in the sky.

Many local politicians, however, gave vent to their displeasure.

Marina Thurner (GUD) was the first to get started: She likes the event per se, but it no longer fits in with the times of "Save the Bees".

"We cannot set off fireworks in the bird sanctuary." In addition to Annelies Schwarz-Goehr and Karl-Heinz Schuster, Michael Ruhland (all FBB) also openly expressed his opinion: "We are talking about the climate crisis," he emphasized.

"I don't find it acceptable to blow up fireworks." Even the mayor said: "I have a problem with fireworks."

The debate does not only concern the municipality at the Soier See.

In recent years, it has appeared in many places before New Year's Eve.

Key word: environmental pollution from fine dust.

The volume also plays a role in the discussion with a view to protecting animals.

In Bad Bayersoien's case, the swans are one of them.

Seek talks with organizer

On the other hand, the municipality lives from tourism.

And thus from guests.

"We have to offer something," Tobias Maier (GUD) explained.

"And the most important thing is the fireworks, people are waiting for them." It was clear to everyone that this could not simply be canceled without replacement.

Even the name of the event would probably no longer work.

"We would certainly have to rename them," said Kieweg.

As long as the fireworks question has not been clarified, Thurner made it clear that she would find it difficult to raise her hand and grant the 20,000 euros.

"If you vote for it, you have to expect the fireworks 98 percent," said the mayor.

Rupert Haseidl, on the other hand, appealed for the money to be stopped.

"I think that there is already quite a lot organized," said the GUD representative.

Like Kieweg, he suggested sitting down with Josef Felix, the organizer, and discussing alternative solutions, which the local politicians agreed to – and postponed the decision.

Green light from the district office

Maximilian Drexler (GUD) complained about this unnecessary haste.

"We don't have time to have a reasonable discussion," he complained.

Precisely because the preparations for the event are already underway.

According to him, it would have been better to have started on the topic in November.

"Now it's pressing."

My space

there is time pressure.

This was underlined by Kieweg, who, when asked by the daily newspaper, emphasized the “unimaginable” commitment of the initiator.

The meeting, she said at the meeting, must take place in a timely manner.

There was a first phone call by Monday afternoon, but no appointment with the head of the spectacle.

Felix came up with the idea of the event, he brought it to life in 2004.

It's not the first time he's heard that there are concerns about fireworks.

But he had not expected that the municipal council would still question this for 2023.

Because he also contacted the district office early on to report the rain of rockets, more is not legally necessary.

But the organizer asked for reassurance that it would be approved.

That was the end of it for him.

Wrong thought.

People come for the fireworks and not because they want to hear brass band music.

Joseph Felix

The conductor of the Soier brass band is less annoyed by the discussion per se. He considers it legitimate to talk about alternatives for the professional pyro program.

But he says with a somewhat cynical undertone: If the idea of nature conservation is to be taken into account, then "one would also have to rethink the way of blowing wise men".

It is the point in time and the way of communication that bothers him.

"We should have sat down together in advance and not made a fuss now," he says.

Kieveg had promised him that for the beginning of December, nothing happened.

In the meantime, Felix is in negotiations with the innkeepers, and a lot has already been settled with regard to the technical systems and the fireworks.

"I'm tired of starting all over again."

For the initiator one thing is certain: no fireworks, no "Bad Bayersoien in Flammen".

Nobody should take this as a defiant reaction.

The event, which benefits the community financially, simply wouldn't make sense without it.

The red Bengal fire, for example, is their identifying mark.

"People come because of the fireworks and not because they want to hear brass band music." To offer a laser show like 2013 instead goes beyond the scope.

"That was very expensive," emphasizes the organizer, "we would need a huge mountain of money."

Felix fights for the event, but still remains pragmatic.

If "Bad Bayersoien in Flammen" is not desired, "then it's just not".

The head of the Werdenfels Musikbund district is no longer available to set up a completely new concept.

The municipality would have to look for another candidate for this.
