Environmental activists are making false emergency calls via an app.
Emergency services have rushed to “emergencies” in Essen several times.
State security is now investigating.
Essen – The police and fire brigade went out several times on Tuesday to urgent emergencies in Essen (North Rhine-Westphalia).
Urgent operations in the city area were received via the “nora” emergency app.
On site, the emergency calls turned out to be wrong, the Essen police said on Wednesday.
A group of self-proclaimed environmental activists have claimed responsibility for the crime.
Essen (NRW): Self-proclaimed climate protectors abuse the emergency call app "nora"
After the first fake emergency calls on Tuesday evening (December 20), the police and fire brigade moved out around 8 p.m.: A supposed gas leak in a residential building and a person covered in blood had reportedly been reported via the emergency call app.
Both false alarms!
At the scene, the officials did not find anyone injured, nor could a gas leak be detected.
In the course of the evening, the self-proclaimed climate activists made further emergency calls about an alleged burglary with armed perpetrators and another alleged gas leak, according to the police.
In all cases, numerous rescue workers went to the sites and were not available for other possible operations, according to the police.

After the first emergency call, the app user contacted the control center via chat with the following message: “You thought it was an emergency, but the real emergency – the impending climate catastrophe – which will kill millions of people, is being consistently ignored by our politicians.
We will continue this form of protest until our federal government enacts effective legislation to prevent climate catastrophe.”
Misuse of the emergency call app: the police are following the trail to southern Germany
The police state protection has started investigations into the abuse of emergency calls, the statement said.
According to initial findings, a group of environmental activists from southern Germany are suspected of having made the emergency calls.
"The investigations are ongoing," said a press spokeswoman for the Essen police force at the request of

The police emphasize that anyone who misuses the emergency call app is liable to prosecution.
"If false emergency calls are deliberately made using the nora emergency call app, this has the same consequences as misusing the emergency call numbers 112 and 110."
The "nora" warning app is actually intended for people with limited speech and hearing abilities, who can make an emergency call without having to speak.
With the emergency call app, the police, fire brigade and rescue service can be reached anywhere in Germany.
