The Herrsching and Breitbrunn fire brigades have completed 538 operations so far this year.

The current figures were presented by the commander in charge, Daniel Pleyer, to the municipal council on Monday evening – and at least one aspect caused thoughtful faces.

Herrsching – The current year began for the Herrsching volunteer fire department with a complicated large-scale operation.

When Commander Daniel Pleyer presented the preliminary balance sheet for 2022 to the municipal council on Monday evening, he still called the event from New Year's Eve "very rare" and "rather a scenario from the fire brigade school".

On New Year's Eve around 11:20 p.m., a Ford left the road on the state road between Wartaweil and Fischen, crashed into a tree and finally remained on the roof.

Three people were trapped in the vehicle, a fourth among them.

The operation, which entered the statistics as the first of the year, lasted six hours.

By Monday evening, 537 more had been added, Pleyer explained.

The Herrsching Weir counted 447 missions, and the Breitbrunn Weir 91.

Three quarters of this is accounted for by the First Responders, who are based at the fire brigade.

So far this year, Herrsching has been spared major weather conditions such as storms or flooding, explained Pleyer.

The major incidents of the year included the hazardous substance alarm at the Scheitz dairy in Erling, where nitric acid had leaked at the end of March, and the fire at the gymnasium construction site at the state secondary school in mid-July.

Corona pandemic as good as over - fire brigades are preparing for a possible blackout

In addition to deployments and exercises, crisis prevention determines the work of the fire brigade.

During the corona pandemic, for example, the military distributed 6,000 protective masks and 3,000 rapid tests, Pleyer reported.

"Now the Corona pandemic is as good as over and we have to prepare for a possible blackout." Gerd Mulert (Greens) wanted to know to what extent disabled people would be given special consideration.

For good and understandable reasons, there is no registration of people with disabilities, said Pleyer, which of course makes prevention more difficult in specific cases.

Like Mayor Christian Schiller, he appealed to neighbors to look out for each other in the event of a longer power outage - "if I know that my neighbor is in a wheelchair and suddenly the elevator isn't working, then I'll take a look,"

What makes him think is the housing situation in Herrsching and in the district in general.

Although the number of staff in the two fire brigades is relatively constant at currently 143 people (Herrsching 93, Breitbrunn 50), including 106 active people and 37 young people, "If we have resignations, it's mostly because the living space is so expensive," emphasized Pleyer.

This has been a massive problem for a long time - especially since recruiting new members through the conventional channels no longer works.

The Long Night of the Fire Brigade was very well attended, but no one subsequently joined the fire brigade.

two special dates in the coming year for fire brigades

Pleyer described the fire simulation system, which was set up in Herrsching for three days and in which 73 participants could practice extinguishing attacks under real conditions in a room heated up to 700 degrees, as "a highlight" for the active participants.

There was a huge compliment from Christian Schiller.

"The statistics are very impressive," said the mayor.

"You forget that quickly." It is very important what the volunteers did.

They already have two special dates on their calendar for next year: on July 1st and 2nd, 2023, both fire brigades will celebrate their 150th anniversary.

And who knows: maybe there will be two newcomers by then that we've been waiting for for a long time.

The delivery of the new vehicle ordered was delayed due to missing parts, "we hope for 2023," said Pleyer.

And the new emergency boat for the Ammersee has now been ordered.
