In December 2002, ie 20 years ago, the brewery opened in Schongau.

Eventful times are behind the gastronomy.

For the anniversary, the innkeepers looked back – and into the future.

Schongau - An occasion to reminisce and at the same time look ahead: the Schongau brewery has been in existence for 20 years, and this anniversary has now been celebrated.

Among the visitors were district administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß, who tapped the winter beer - a festival beer - "sovereignty with four shots", as well as numerous regular guests, suppliers and partners as well as some former shareholders who contributed to the founding at the time, according to brewmaster Stephan Albrecht .

Around 200 people were financially involved 20 years ago in the conversion of the former Baustadel in the city of Schongau into a brewery with a restaurant.

Peter Just had the idea. He should also be remembered at the celebration, which was important to the current operators, Marion Albrecht and her family, emphasizes his son Stephan Albrecht.

It was the 10th anniversary of Just's death.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.)

The eventful history of the Schongau brewery

Stephan Albrecht tells how, even as a boy, he was allowed to look over his shoulder while brewing beer, how the fascination for the craft spread to him and he took up the profession.

It is also thanks to Just that there is a brewery in Schongau at all.

However, times were not always rosy.

At the time, the tenant had had problems with his financial institution, which no longer wanted to maintain a loan.

In February 2009 there was a compulsory auction - the bid went to the only bidder, Brauhaus AG and thus to the shareholders.

But the brewery remained financially in a sloping position.

Insolvency was filed and a closure in 2012 was only prevented by a hair's breadth.

Marion Albrecht finally became the tenant with the "Kulturteam München GmbH" and took the brewery back to calmer waters.

And she brought Peter Just back as master brewer.

There is no longer a stock corporation – but you still feel connected and grateful to the shareholders of the time, says Stephan Albrecht, and are happy to invite them.

In fact, his father Tyll-Patrick Albrecht was once a shareholder himself.

It was intended as a bit of a gag back then, Stephan Albrecht said.

Because his paternal great-grandfather had his own brewery in Bad Tölz until the 1970s, which was then bought by Hacker-Pschorr.

“That was the time back then,” says Albrecht.

When the plans for a brewery in Schongau became concrete in 2002, Marion Albrecht and friends bought shares as a birthday present for her husband in order to make him a brewery owner again.

Stephan Albrecht explains that his parents were active in the cultural sector.

Of course, it was not foreseeable that they would one day run the brewery themselves.

However, culture – from plays to concerts – has been an important part of the brewery since the early days and continues to be.

Beer chocolates for guests and safe for beer mugs

The anniversary evening should also serve to look into the future.

The regionality plays an important role for the hosts.

Sustainable products are already being used, and more and more vegetarian options are being offered – both of which we would like to pursue further.

According to Stephan Albrecht, the brewery works with the bakery with heart, which, for example, also bakes with the spent grain from the brewery.

In addition, there is an exchange with "Dittrich's Hofladen" in Oberhausen, from where you get pasta, for example.

And you work together with a butcher's shop in Reichling or a distillery in the Allgäu, which produces a brandy from the Brauhaus Bock, which in turn is processed into liqueurs by the brewery team.

A new delicacy related to this was presented at the anniversary evening: a patisserie from the Allgäu produces beer chocolates for the brewery.

There are five different varieties, some with alcohol, some without – beer wort is used for these.

“Anyone can serve a schnapps at the end.

That's not our way," says Stephan Albrecht.

Instead, there should now be chocolates for guests with a corresponding turnover.

In addition, based on the Hofbräuhaus in Munich, there is a so-called beer safe in which regular guests keep their own beer mugs.

Three mugs or places in the vault were awarded at the anniversary evening.
