Next Saturday, the Syrian Trust for Development, in cooperation with the Governorate of Rural Damascus, will launch an initiative to clean the Dirani River, one of the branches of the Al-Aouj River, and to irrigate 2,100 hectares of agricultural areas and 250,000 trees in the governorate.
The Governor of Rif Dimashq, Safwan Abu Saadi, indicated during a meeting held today with the Syrian Trust for Development team, the importance of this initiative, which is carried out with the support of the Trust, and in cooperation with the local councils in the governorate, with civil society and economic activities.
He explained that work will be done to implement spatial treatment plants in every village close to the river to purify water and benefit from it in agricultural work, calling on the Peasants Union in Damascus and its countryside and the Directorate of Agriculture to activate extension units and agricultural associations in the targeted areas, and to start distributing seedlings to farmers to re-expand green spaces.
Abu Saada asked the water resources to work to remove all encroachments on the Dirani River in the towns of Khan Al-Sheih and Darusha, and to remove the rubble on the river’s campus and on its beds. He also asked the Damascus Countryside Fuels Branch and the Water Resources and Technical Services Authority to provide the necessary support to implement the initiative.
For their part, a number of concerned heads of local councils called for the need to support the municipalities targeted by this work with the necessary mechanisms and fuel to be able to carry out their responsibilities.
The meeting was attended by members of the executive office of the health and agriculture sector, the head of the Damascus Farmers Union and its countryside, directors of agriculture, water resources and fuel in the governorate, and heads of local councils in Darayya, Moadamiyat al-Sham, Artouz, Mansheyet Khan Al-Sheeh and Darosha.
