The Bavarian metal and electrical industry is anxious about the coming year.

After a year of high energy prices, the shortage of skilled workers is now becoming a real endurance test.

Munich – The situation in the Bavarian metal and electronics industry has stabilized since the summer, with foreign business in particular doing better.

Accordingly, every second company rates its situation as "good", according to a survey by the association of Bavarian metal and electrical employers' associations bayme vbm among 275 companies.

But there are also downsides: Nine percent of those surveyed expect losses for the current year, six percent only expect to break even.

The expectations for the coming year are also poor: "High costs, an endangered security of supply with energy, the cooling global economy and various geopolitical risks are unsettling and burdening our companies," said CEO Bertram Brossardt.

"At the same time, the shortage of workers and skilled workers is becoming a stress test and an obstacle to growth for our industry".

The supply chain situation also remains tense.

Almost half of the companies are suffering moderately to severely from a lack of raw materials and preliminary products - and almost all from late deliveries.

After all, this problem is unlikely to get worse in the coming year: “We expect a recovery from spring 2023, which will slow down in autumn 2023.

On average for 2023, production will be at the level of 2022,” says Brossardt.

The shortage of skilled workers could increase drastically as society ages

Nevertheless, the industry fears a shortage of skilled workers due to the aging of society.

It is therefore hiring new workers: “By September, Bavarian M+E companies had created more than 11,000 jobs.

Another 4,000 will be added by the end of the year.

In the coming year, we expect employment to increase by around 10,000 jobs,” says Brossardt.

In order to compensate for people entering retirement, more immigration is needed in the long term: "By 2035 we will lose up to 700,000 employees." That is why "we welcome the current developments in the legal adjustment of the immigration of skilled workers".

Retirement at 67 must also be implemented - "of course only for those who can," restricted Brossardt.

"There is also huge potential in part-time employees who we need to recruit for full-time," says the vbm general manager of the associations.

This is mostly aimed at women.

“Of course, the right framework conditions have to be created for this.

We have to woo people.”

Bavaria is becoming less attractive as a location

Worrying: Bavaria has become less attractive as a location: According to vbm, only 28 percent of companies want to increase their investments in Bavaria: "But 23 percent of this is for expansion," says Brossardt.

In terms of energy price brakes, he criticized the EU requirements as too narrow.

“For the coming months we hope that the gas and electricity price brake will have a relieving effect on companies.

Otherwise, this would lead to an economic downturn.”

In the long term, the focus in Bavaria must be on hydroelectric power that is capable of base load.

"Biomass must be given new impetus, and we must now make significant and rapid progress in expanding wind power," demanded Brossardt.

“In the case of photovoltaics, it depends on how quickly we advance storage.

But it's good that pumped storage power plants are now – unexpectedly – back on the agenda.” For the moment, Brossardt also advocates the continued operation of the three nuclear power plants.
