Although the temperatures are still mild, winter is setting in.

A year ago, on December 21, 2021, a 35-year-old homeless man died of cold in Bordeaux near Saint-Jean station.

To prevent this tragedy from happening again, several actions are being taken by the municipality.

This Tuesday, the mayor of Bordeaux, Pierre Hurmic, visited a new emergency accommodation center which has just opened at 5 rue Buhan.

Open until the end of April 2023, this center is intended for all audiences, with a total capacity of 35 places.

It welcomes people in need from 4:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. and they can stay there for up to 15 days.

Orientation on the spot is only done by 115. The opening of this place of accommodation, "

which completes the general reception system, is the result of an unprecedented private initiative

", specifies the municipality.

The city was "

aware of the wish of a building owner to lend his unoccupied property

" and put him in touch with the Halte 33 association.

"

This opening illustrates a desire to promote solidarity initiatives, including when they do not come from the city or the CCAS (communal center for social action)

", adds the city, for whom the actions in favor of the homeless "

depend a lot on patrons and associative actors, not only on institutional action

".

142 additional places this winter

State services are also mobilized.

The prefect of Gironde recalls that "

each year, the State devotes in Gironde more than 51 million euros to solidarity with the most deprived

", including 33 million "

for social monitoring, marauding, accommodation and l 'accompaniment

'.

The State permanently finances “

nearly 4,000 emergency accommodation places in Gironde

”, and this winter “

at least 142 additional places will be open

”.

In April 2022, a reception center was opened on Avenue Thiers, near Place Stalingrad.

Challenged by the left opposition, during the municipal council of November 8, on the allegedly "

catastrophic

" reception conditions of this place, Pierre Hurmic replied that "

what would have been catastrophic would have been not to open

".

In August 2021, the ecological town hall also installed mobile showers for the most vulnerable, on the Place des Quinconces.

The mayor of Bordeaux is also one of the ten city councilors who signed an open letter to Élisabeth Borne dated October 27, 2022, in which the elected officials note "

a growing number of requests for emergency accommodation and an increase in situations of unprecedented precariousness

" and deplore the gradual reduction in the number of emergency accommodation places.

In Bordeaux, a second edition of “

Solidarity Night

” will be organized on January 26.

In 2021, 450 volunteers and 165 agents from the city, the metropolis and the CCAS were mobilized to identify people on the street.

This action had made it possible to count 561 homeless people in the city, in addition to the 297 people living in squats, to arrive at a total of at least 858 people “

who require urgent shelter in Bordeaux

”.
